One of the greatest barriers for people with disabilities, when returning to work (RTW), is the process of reintegrating into the workplace. With this in mind, this course, RTW best practices will frame the foundation of this course. Participants will review tangible research that shows providing RTW that is safe, sustainable, and appropriately timed, provides therapeutic value to workers with disabilities and is a win – win situation for all.
Topic further explored include:
- the promotion of a supportive work environment for workers in a RTW program and the importance of a RTW policy;
- the difference between disability management and disability prevention; and
- the evolution of the paradigm shift from disability management to disability prevention.
Groups, including the World Health Organization, National Institute of Disability Management and Research, International Labour Organization, Sherbrooke/PREVICAP models, Institute of Work and Health, Roundtable Project and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board strategies) involved in the abovementioned paradigm shift are discussed.
Participants are encouraged to use real life examples to put disability prevention into practice.
