SUMMARY:Mental Health First Aid
DESCRIPTION:The Mental Health Commission of Canada reports that one in every five Canadians experiences a mental health problem within a given year. While we often know a lot about physical illness\, there tends to be less knowledge about mental health or substance use problems. This lack of understanding leads to fear and negative attitudes towards individuals living with these problems. It prevents people from seeking help for themselves and from providing appropriate support to people around them. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the support provided to a person who may be experiencing a decline in their mental well-being or a mental health crisis. \nCourse participants will learn how to recognize signs that a person may be experiencing a decline in their mental well-being or a mental health crisis and encourage that person to: \nTalk about declines in their mental well-being;\nDiscuss professional and other supports that could help with recovery to improve mental well-being;\nReach out to these supports;\nAssist in a mental health or substance use crisis;\nUse MHFA actions to maintain one’s own mental well-being. \nQuick Facts \nMHFA is active in 25 countries (in Canada since 2007).\nOver 500\,000 people from 5\,000+ communities in Canada have been trained in MHFA.\nOver 10\,000 MHFA courses have been delivered in Canada.\nAdaptations of MHFA include courses for adults who interact with youth\, First Nations\, Inuit\, Northern peoples\, police\, seniors\, and the veteran community. \n  \nSchedule \nOctober 8-19: Module 1 – Self-Directed: Enrollment Codes provided to participants\nProof of completion of Module 1 due Wednesday\, October 20\, 8 p.m. \nOctober 22\, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.: Module 2 – Virtual Classroom\nPractice applying MHFA actions to situations of declining mental well-being.\nGuidelines for MHFA conversations with people from diverse cultures and members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community. \nOctober 29\, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.: Module 3 – Virtual Classroom\nDiscussion on using MHFA actions for self-care.\nPractice using MHFA actions in crisis situations. \nCost: $169.00 (incl. HST)\nSpaces are limited! Register before October 19\, 2021\, 12 p.m.*\n*Although participants can start studying Module 1 on October 8 when the codes are provided\, you can still register and get your code until October 19\, 2021. Please make sure you complete two-hour self-paced Module 1 by Wednesday\, October 20\, 8 p.m. \nParticipants will receive a pdf version of the “MHFA Participant Reference Guide” that outlines MHFA actions for developing mental health and substance use problems\, and mental health and substance use crises. SUMMARY:Vaccines – a tool to end the COVID-19 pandemic
DESCRIPTION:Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic\, it seems that there is always new information coming from all sorts of platforms. Sometimes\, it can be difficult to distinguish real information from misinformation. \nJoin our second webinar with Dr. Chénier where she will translate scientific information into plain language and will guide us through the work of our immune system\, how the body responds to clear infections and how a vaccine supports the body’s natural abilities to heal\, and the kinds of vaccines that are on the market right now. The webinar will include new information and updates since we last met in April. \nUsing this new understanding\, we hope is that you will be able to better advocate for yourselves with your health care providers by asking questions about vaccination that are relevant for your health condition. \nRegister below on or before June 12\, 2021. \nAndréane Chénier\, M.Sc.\, PhD\, CRSP\nAndréane is an occupational Health and Safety Specialist and a CUPE National Health and Safety Representative. SUMMARY:Vaccines – a tool to end the COVID-19 pandemic
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: If you missed the webinar\, you can now watch it here. \nSince the start of the COVID-19 pandemic\, it seems that there is always new information coming from all sorts of platforms. Sometimes\, it can be difficult to distinguish real information from misinformation. \nJoin us for a conversation with Dr. Chénier who will translate scientific information into plain language and will guide us through the work of our immune system\, how the body responds to clear infections and how a vaccine supports the body’s natural abilities to heal\, and the kinds of vaccines that are on the market right now. \nUsing this new understanding\, we hope is that you will be able to better advocate for yourselves with your health care providers by asking questions about vaccination that are relevant for your health condition. \nAndréane Chénier\, M.Sc.\, PhD\, CRSP\nAndréane is an occupational Health and Safety Specialist and a CUPE National Health and Safety Representative. She also holds a Masters in Immunology and a PhD in Biomolecular Sciences.
