SUMMARY:Worker's Compensation Rights\, Obligations\, Benefits & Services
DESCRIPTION:The Niagara Regional Labour Council in partnership with OSSTF and ODRT will host a worker’s compensation Level I and II at Brock University August 5th – 8th\, 2014. The week-long course is geared to education sector workers and covers the history of worker’s compensation in Ontario\, legal and general principles of the system\, determination of compensable injuries\, how to file a claim\, obligations of workers and employers\, early and safe return to work\, legislative changes over 3 eras and their effects on benefits\, future economic loss and non economic loss awards and loss of earnings.  Participants will explore detailed examples of benefit calculations and parameters affecting the final numbers. \nThe funding and structure of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) and appeal system are described in relation to the New Service Delivery Module and the roles of each WSIB position. The adjudication process is described and participants follow the flow of a claim through the process. Problem resolution and the process for an appeal are presented. The organization of a Board file is presented and participants explore how to effectively review a file\, make a case plan to proceed to move a claim\nforward and use this knowledge to review a case file. \nThis course will be of interest to Stewards\, Health and Safety\, Return to Work and WSIB/Benefit Representatives. SUMMARY:Medical Orientation (Education Sector)
DESCRIPTION:The Niagara Regional Labour Council in partnership with OSSTF and ODRT will host a medical orientation workshop that covers technical terms found in worker’s compensation claims. The workshop begins July 28 at Brock University and is geared to education sector workers.  It covers medical terminology\, human anatomy with a focus on different organ systems (skeletal\, muscular\, nervous\, auditory\, ocular\, respiratory\, circulatory\, digestive and integumentary). Specific injuries (back\, bone\, MSIs\, lower extremities) that are commonly seen in WSIB cases are discussed. Disorders such as chronic pain and fibromyalgia are also discussed in detail.\nMental stress related injuries are examined and the WSIB policies relating to traumatic stress\, psychotraumatic disability and behavioural disorders are presented. \nThis course will be of interest to Stewards\, Health and Safety\, Return to Work and WSIB/Benefit Representatives.
